After a six-year break, the iconic Legends Game is set to make a triumphant return on Thursday 28 August, live and free on Seven and 7plus Sport from 7.00pm AEST.
Held at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium, the much-loved match will see past AFL greats and fan favourites go head-to-head in a state of origin clash between Victoria and the All Stars — a tribute to football icon E.J. Whitten, who died from prostate cancer 30 years ago.
The event is aimed at raising awareness and funds for prostate cancer through the Australian Prostate Centre, a leading hub for patient care, treatment, and collaborative research.
Leading the Victorian side will be Hawthorn legend and 7AFL Expert Commentator Luke Hodge as Captain, with former 7NEWS Melbourne Sport Presenter and AFL great Tim Watson coaching. St Kilda great and 7AFL Expert Nick Riewoldt will Captain the All Stars, coached by Hawthorn icon and Seven’s House of Wellness co-host Shane Crawford.
At today’s official media launch in Melbourne, both teams announced their first draft picks — AFL superstars Gary Ablett Jnr for Victoria and Cyril Rioli for the All Stars.
Seven Network’s Head of AFL and Sport Innovation, Gary O’Keeffe, said the return of the Legends Game is a major highlight on the AFL calendar.
“We are thrilled to see this iconic event return and for footy fans to be able to watch all the action live and free on Seven and 7plus Sport,” O’Keeffe said.
“To see a host of popular personalities, and AFL legends including our own Luke Hodge and Nick Riewoldt come out of retirement for such a great cause is important and will make for exciting viewing.”
Prostate cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australian men, with one in five expected to be diagnosed in their lifetime. Funds raised will go towards supporting patient care and critical research at the Australian Prostate Centre, part of the RULE Prostate Cancer charity.
