The feature documentary Prime Minister, which takes a behind-the-scenes look at former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s time in office, will make its television debut on CNN on Sunday, November 16 at 9pm ET/PT.
Directed by Michelle Walshe and Lindsay Utz, the film follows Ardern’s seven years in politics, from her rapid rise to power in 2017 to her resignation in 2023. It includes personal interviews, home footage, and rarely seen archival material offering a close look at her leadership, family life, and the pressures of governing in the social media era.
Prime Minister explores key moments from Ardern’s tenure, including her responses to major national crises and her reputation as a global advocate for empathy in politics.
Following the broadcast, CNN anchor Abby Phillip will host a special roundtable for CNN All Access subscribers. The discussion will feature journalists, cultural figures, and other women leaders reflecting on Ardern’s legacy and her approach to compassionate leadership.
Produced by Cass Avery, Clarke Gayford, Leon Kirkbeck, Gigi Pritzker, Rachel Shane, and Katie Peck, Prime Minister is a Dark Doris production made in association with Divergent Pictures. It’s presented by Magnolia Pictures, HBO Documentary Films, CNN Films, and Madison Wells.
The documentary premiered earlier this year at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award for World Cinema Documentary, before its theatrical release through Magnolia Pictures. It’s currently available on HBO Max and will stream on CNN’s All Access platform from November 17.
